1965 S Special Mint Set Uncirculated

 (1965 S Special Mint Set)
In 1964, just when the mint was removing 90% silver coins from circulation, and the U.S. was having a coinn shortage, the Mint announced that beginning in 1965, no Proof Sets, or Mint Sets would be produced, Instead they would be making a Special Mint Set. Special Mint Set coins were not proofs, and were not uncirculated, Mint State pieces. Dies for the coins were over polished, while the planchet themselves were not polished. The resulting SMS coins have a brilliant, proof like appearance, much nicer than the run-of-the-mill circulation coins. In 1965 these sets were released in the Traditional Mint Cellophane and White Envelope. Note, each set contains a 40% silver Half Dollar.

1965 US Special Mint Set Original Government Packaging

(1965 US Special Mint Set Original Government)
The 1965 United States "Special Mint Set" contains a total of 5 different coins. The 1965 sets mark the first of three years for these Special Mint Sets released by the United States Mint.Due to rising silver prices, coin shortages gripped the nation in 1965. In response, the U.S. Mint did not produce Mint Sets and Proof Sets between 1965 and 1967. Rather, they issued these Special Mint Sets. The coins in this set are struck from specially prepared dies, but not as proofs. As a result, they display mirror surfaces that are unique to these sets. In order to alleviate the coin shortage, the Mint removed the mintmarks from all coins this year. The 1965 set contains five coins: The Lincoln cent, the Jefferson nickel, the Roosevelt dime, Washington quarter and Kennedy half-dollar.Because silver prices had risen far above the nominal value of the dime and quarter, these coins were struck in a special "clad" composition for the first time. For these coins, a layer of copper is sandwiched between two layers of nickel. The dime and quarter are still being struck this way today. The Kennedy half-dollar is the only coin that contains 40% silver. This "vintage" set has been previously owned. It is in "like new" condition and comes in its full original US Mint packaging.

3 Special Mint Sets (1965-1967) SMS Coins Uncirculated

(3 Special Mint Sets (1965-1967) SMS Coins)
In 1964 the US Mint stopped making Proof Sets at the Philadelphia Mint moving production to the San Francisco Mint. But it took the Mint 3 years to get set up, so no regular issue Mint or Proof sets were released. What they made instead was a special finish coin of each denomination and placed them into a small holder - the birth of our first Satin Finish Sets !!! Today, over 40 years later it's a challenge to find quality sets in the original US Mint Packaging. This item consists of all three Special US Mint Sets (1965-1967).
