Source

 (Source)
European and African based, globally-connected collective Afro Celt Sound System have been instrumental in fuelling that far-reaching approach; over 20 years, they've found kindred spirits across international talent, and forged a reputation for exhilarating shows and an accomplished catalogue of albums, dating back to their 1996 debut, Volume 1: Sound Magic. Now ACSS continue their adventures on ECC Records, with their first studio recording for a decade - 'The Source'. As it's title suggests, The Source summons the original Afro Celt energy and legacy, while simultaneously yielding fresh inspirations. "There was so much scepticism when we started out", admits Grammy-nominated multi-instrumental founder and producer Simon Emmerson. "We've gone from what was a fairly eccentric concept 20 years ago, to something that everyone understands; I think that's testimony to how resilient the music is. It is the first album to fully celebrate the African and Asian roots brought to the band by long-term members' vocalist, kora and balafon player N'Faly Kouyat and Dhol drummer Johnny Kalsi. Along with founder member Simon Emmerson (producer, guitars, cittern) and new core member Griogair (vocals, piping, guitars) winner of Gaelic Singer of the Year at the 2015 Scots Trad Music Awards.

Ritual

 (Ritual)
Belgium, not the first place you would think of when it comes to Latin or Afro funk. Yet one of the greatest records to blend both styles came from the small northern European country, masterminded by Nico Gomez and his Afro Percussion Inc. Ritual was originally released in 1971 on the Dutch label Omega International (Gomez was born in Holland before moving to Belgium in the late 40s) and is being reissued by Mr Bongo in 2013, bringing its blazing funk grooves to both new ears and those already tuned in to this masterpiece s legacy. Across its 11 tracks Ritual delivers the kind of production, arrangement and musicianship that rightfully belong in a dictionary next to the definition of professional. Gomez band was tight and they knew it, showing it off on their covers of Perez Prado s Caballo Negro and Lupita by injecting the originals with a deep funk that blends both Afro and Latin influences. On Samba De Una Nota So and El Condor Pasa , another pair of covers, they switch to soulful downtempo with mesmerising ease. The title cut remains one of the album s highlights, a devastating dancefloor groove with horns to match that has aged beautifully and was heavily sampled by Liquid People for The Dragon . Pa! Pa! Pa! Pa! adds touches of rock with fuzzy guitars for one of the album s...

Herbie Manns Afro-Jazz Sextet African Suite plus The Herbie Mann Nonet Flute, Brass, Vibes & Percussion

(Herbie Manns Afro-Jazz Sextet African Suite plus The Herbie Mann Nonet Flute, Brass, Vibes &)
Herbie Mann was one of the most forthright, rhythmically acute and culturally receptive of jazz flute players, virtues amply demonstrated on the two albums, African Suite and Flute, Brass, Vibes & Percussion, collected here. They were made when, inspired by a stint with Machito s Afro-Cuban orchestra in 1958, he decided to form his own small-combo using some of the same basic rhythmic concepts and opened with the new group in June 1959 at New York s Basin Street East club. The move established Mann as the leading exponent of jazz played with African percussion instruments added to the rhythm section, a position underlined by his passionate playing and consistent musical perception on these two albums. Although vibraphonist Johnny Rae is exhilarating throughout both, at the music s core remains the wonderfully exciting rhythmic interplay between the congas, bongos and drums. With this combination of ingredients Mann created a signature style for himself for a time, one which appealed not only to jazz audiences, but whose accessibility also appealed to audiences not normally receptive to jazz.
