Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail (Dover Books on Americana)

(Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail (Dover Books on)
"If I had not spent my year in North Dakota, I would never have become President of the United States," declared Theodore Roosevelt. The future statesman took his first steps toward the highest office in the land in the Dakota Badlands of the 1880s, where he began his transformation from aristocrat to democrat. Roosevelt left his home in the East as Theodore, but he returned as "Teddy," a rugged outdoorsman and soon-to-be hero of the Rough Riders.Recounted with infectious enthusiasm, Roosevelt's tales range from ranching on the open plains to hunting in the mountains. His reminiscences conjure up the vanished world of the frontier, with thrilling accounts of chasing bighorn sheep and horse thieves, encountering Indians, branding cattle, and bronco busting. Roosevelt's recollections helped elevate the cowboy's image from that of an ordinary farm laborer into a figure of nobility and courage. The works of Frederic Remington, another great mythmaker of the Old West, illustrate these memoirs. Sixty-five black-and-white images by this renowned American artist complement Roosevelt's stories of freedom and self-reliance.

The Romance of My Life: Theodore Roosevelt's Speeches in Dakota

(The Romance of My Life: Theodore Roosevelt's Speeches in)
TR always credited his time ranching in Dakota as the crucible that provided him the support in raising his Rough Rider Regiment and paved the way for his later successes. The book contains a chronology of all TR's visits to Dakota, with chapters devoted to each of TR's trips and stays in North Dakota, 1886-1918, giving the text of virtually every speech delivered in North Dakota and the historical background of the speeches. A major influence on Roosevelt's life was the years he spent ranching in the Badlands of Dakota Territory, where he could lead the "strenuous life" and as he developed physically, he also became a man and a natural born leader. TR said that had it not been for his ranching years in North Dakota, he would not have become president. TR quote from back of book, "I must say that here, in this country of hills and plateaus, the romance of my life began .., I had studied a lot about men and things before I saw you fellows, but it was only when I came out here that I began to know anything or to measure men right."

In 1883, two notable individuals traveled along similar, yet later diverging paths from the eastern United States to a hamlet located on the west bank of the Little Missouri River in southwestern North Dakota. Both men, the Marquis de Mores and Theodore Roosevelt, were to distinguish themselves as wealthy cattle ranchers within months of arriving on what was then the western Dakota frontier. The names of both individuals continue to resound through the historical chapters that shaped this part of the American landscape.

Theodore Roosevelt S Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail

(Theodore Roosevelt S Ranch Life and the Hunting)
Before he ascended to the highest office in the land as the United States’ youngest president, Theodore Roosevelt, with illustrations by Frederic Remington, though a New York City man born and bred, was a devotee of the Old West. In 1888, he published this charming ode to the American frontier, from the rewarding hard work of a rancher on the open plains to the pleasures of hunting the big game of mountains high. Today, the inimitable prose and infectious enthusiasm of Roosevelt’s writing here serves as much to limn a unique aspect of the character of the nation as it sings an elegy for a disappearing way of life. Includes numerous illustrations by Frederic Remington. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Roosevelt’s Letters to His Children, A Book-Lover’s Holidays in the Open, America and the World War, Through the Brazilian Wilderness and Papers on Natural History, The Strenuous Life: Essays and Addresses, and Historic Towns: New York Politician and soldier, naturalist and historian, American icon THEODORE ROOSEVELT, (1858–1919) was 26th President of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909, and the first American to win a Nobel Prize, in 1906, when he was awarded the Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War. He is the author of 35 books.
